THOUSANDS gathered to pay tribute to the courage and contribution of Australia's servicemen and women on Anzac Day around Cessnock.

In a prologue, Cessnock RSL Sub-branch president Max Lewis spoke to those present about how Anzac Day was a time to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives.
"We are assembled here to commemorate that immortal day when the young men of Australia by their deeds and sacrifice demonstrated to the world that Australia was truly a nation," he said.
"One this day, we remember the sacrifice of such men for an ideal,for a way of life. Let us take strength in the knowledge and hope that our sons and daughters will never forget the example set by our forefathers.
"So let us mourn with pride, but let us also remember with equal pride, those who served and still live.".
The popular march down the main street brought out thousands of local residents with people lining up on both sides of the street to clap and cheer for the city's veterans.
Mid-morning services were also held at Abermain, Neath, Weston, Aberdare, Branxton, Greta and Kurri Kurri.
Dawn services were also held at Branxton, Greta, Kearsley, Kurri Kurri, Millfield, Paxton and Wollombi
