"After reading about this challenge, which is so much easier than the challenge these children will face, I spoke to one of my colleagues at work, Ashley Curry, and put the challenge to her," Cr Olsen said.
"She never hesitated to get on board and that is how we got involved.
"The good news was our boss, Anthony Morris and colleague Alan Provenzano heard what we where doing and are also on board."
The group's team, dubbed Team Demounts, is aiming to raise $350 individually and another $350 as a team.
Mitochondrial disease is a genetic illness which can have debilitating impacts on any part of the body.
"Every six days a child is born who will develop mitochondrial disease. With your support, we can improve diagnosis, treatments and ultimately find cures," Cr Olsen said.
"We will be doing a few long walks around town to make sure we are ready for the walk from Belmont into Newcastle on July 28."
The Bloody Long Walk will be held on July 28, with teams walking from Belmont to Newcastle. People can donate to the team here.
