Cessnock Fire and Rescue crews were called out to the fire at the Cessnock City Council depot on Old Maitland Road just before 1am to reports of two trucks alight.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames before calling for a Hazmat appliance from Rutherford, which decanted 100 litres of hydraulic fluid from the trucks.
A Cessnock Council spokesperson said residents' collection service would continue as normal, however there may be some delays.
Police also responded. Lower Hunter Fire and Rescue Superintendent Greg Symonds said the cause of the fire was still undetermined, but there was no obvious sign of forced entry to the premises.
