What was known as Jeffery Park has been changed to George Jeffery Park in honour of the former Australian Army Sergeant and passionate footballer.

Family, former soccer players and community members were on hand at the park on Friday to watch the unveiling of a sign to honour the park's new name.

Sgt Jeffery was a very active member of the Kearsley community until his death in 1951.

Born in England before migrating to Australia as a young man, he was enlisted in the Australian Army during World War I. He served in Gallipoli and on the Western Front in France, where he rose to the rank of Sgt.

After he was discharged, Sgt Jeffery settled in Kearsley, where he ran a local business and developed the local soccer ground with a shovel and a wheelbarrow.

He held various positions on the Kearsley Soccer Club committee, playing competitively until the age of 53, as well as managing and coaching junior teams.

The name change comes after Cessnock City Council received a number of submissions from family members to further recognise their ancestor.

The Geographical Names Board considered the proposal before the name was officially changed in August last year.

Sgt Jeffery's grandson Allan Cresswell said the establishment of a tourist bay at the park planted the seed to have the park renamed.

"It's come a long way," he said. "It used to be just a cricket ground and play area.

"It's brilliant. It's turned into a nice little entrance to the city of Cessnock."

Mayor Bob Pynsent officially unveiled the new sign alongside Mr Cresswell, saying the name reflected the character and history of the local community.

"It's so important to recognise outstanding contributions to our community," he said.

"It [the sign] just fits in so well. It just looks fantastic."

The new name also creates a point of difference from Jeffries Park in Abermain, which was named after fellow World War I veteran, Victoria Cross recipient Clarence Jeffries.
