On Saturday, the pub will hold Great Northern Country, a rock concert featuring Hurricane Fall, Piper Butcher, Katie Jayne Band and Jarred Taylor and the Iron Shackle Band.

The gig will support Emily Chesson, 11, whose life was turned upside down after being diagnosed with a rare condition last year.

It began in September. Emily was suffering headaches and vomiting, her right eye became lazy and she started to talk out the corner of her mouth.

An optometrist suspected papilledema, or swelling on the brain, as she couldn't see Emily's optical nerve.

Emily was referred to an eye specialist, who confirmed the optometrist's diagnosis along with right side upper limbs weakness.

Emily was booked for an MRI, and within an hour, Emily's mum Shahn Green said a swarm of doctors asked to speak with her and her husband and suggested they get their 4-year-old babysat. "That's the moment we knew whatever news they had wasn't good news," Shahn said.

Doctors explained the MRI revealed a large tumour on Emily's brain. It was warped around her right optic nerve to the back of her skull and down her brainstem.

"They discussed with us that she probably only had a few more days left with us until she would of had a massive stroke or an aneurysm and died," Shahn said.

Emily went in for a five hour operation, where doctors were able to withdraw 90 per cent of the tumour. Emily suffered two strokes and went into cardiac arrest during the operation.

Emily's tumour was diagnosed as a clear cell meningioma stage II. She is one of 10 in the world to have it.

"At this stage we don't know what Emily's recovery will look like but what we do know is we will give her every opportunity to fight this by taking one step at a time," Shahn said.

Funds raised from Great Northern Country will help the family pay for medical costs. Laurie and Sharon Howell of Hotel Cessnock said all charities were worthwhile but looking at "this poor young girl and what she is going through" made it an easy cause to support.
