Members of the SA Branch of the Australian Education Union voted to support the stop work action in a ballot, with branch president Howard Spreadbury saying a pay rise is one point in the union's seven-point plan for enterprise bargaining.

"Remuneration does provide recognition of the value of the work done and indicates a level of respect for the profession," he said.

"We believe that our hardworking educators are a valuable asset for the state."

Earlier this month, the union agreed it would not recommend the government's offer to its members, which included a 2.35 per cent pay rise.

Mr Spreadbury said the offer would leave South Australian educators the lowest paid in Australia for the first year of the new agreement, and subsequent increases would not ensure significant change.

He argued competitive wage increases were vital in maintaining a high standard of education within the state.

"We are already aware that many teaching graduates are being enticed interstate by better offers," he said.

"We know that students, their families and communities value the work that educators do in our schools and preschools.

"We just want the Marshall government and Department for Education to value them too."

Treasurer Rob Lucas said the government would remain firm on its pay offer but would continue to negotiate conditions with the teachers.

He asked union bosses to consider the impact of the strike on parents, grandparents and students, and urged them to reschedule.

"We're urging them... to delay their industrial action by a week and they can protest during one day of their 11 or 12 week school holidays that they have every year," he said.

Teachers will rally at 11am on July 1 at Parliament House in Adelaide, as well as regional centres in Mount Gambier, Whyalla and Port Lincoln.
