Paramedics made an urgent call to police for assistance at a home at McBlane Street, Weston on Thursday afternoon.
Upon arrival, police met with a 31-year-old man who is known to authorities.
Police approached the front door of the home but claim the man threatened to stab them. Ambulance officers had allegedly seen the man earlier in possession of a 20cm long kitchen knife.
Police retreated and the male remained within the house, refusing to comply with police requests. As a result, specialist Police and a Police negotiator were called. Police negotiated with the man for some time before he eventually surrendered and exited the house where he was arrested.
He was conveyed to the Mater Hospital for a mental health assessment and later charged with using an offensive weapon to prevent police investigation and intimidating a police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm. He was refused bail to appear at Cessnock Local Court on July 10.
