My Brilliant Divorce was a hit on London's West End when it starred the beloved Dawn French (Vicar of Dibley, French and Saunders) and now it's coming to Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on August 27, starring Australia's own Mandi Lodge.
Lodge takes centre stage in this hilarious and often moving solo show as Angela, a woman in her prime and recently deserted by her lying, cheating husband for a younger woman.
Angela is trying to take charge of her life after the divorce - a divorce that shocked her, but that everyone else in her life seemed to know she was hurtling head-long toward.
Suddenly finding herself dealing with an empty nest, a disapproving mother, a misogynist lawyer, some dubious counsellors, a bad case of hypochondria and the spectre of poverty, Angela must make a decision - fight to keep her husband, or fight to reclaim her life?
Audiences can expect a funny, contemporary story told with radiant wit and heart. Lodge says she's enjoying the challenge of taking on a demanding issue using humour and honesty.
"As with any upheaval, people can find funny things happen amongst the drama and it is those lighter moments that help us get through and find perspective," she said.
"Our show works as either a funny, heartful time in the theatre or it can give people a chance to recognize the ups and downs of divorce and hopefully feel a bit better about those moments and laugh at some of the sillier stuff that goes on.
"I'm really looking forward to bringing the show to Cessnock as I know audiences there love a good laugh but also have a thoughtful, caring side and so will enjoy the whole journey of this show."
My Brilliant Divorce was written by Geraldine Aron and has been produced in 28 countries around the world. It played in London's Apollo Theatre and was nominated for a prestigious Oliver Award for Best Entertainment.
