Twenty-seven projects were submitted for the NSW Government grant program in the Cessnock electorate, and in July residents were invited to vote for the project they believe will be most beneficial to the community.
The Miller Park project - submitted by Cessnock City Council in conjunction with Branxton-Greta Little Athletics Club and Greta-Branxton Wildcats Football Club - topped the voting in the Cessnock electorate with 1140 points.
Council will receive $49,449 to extend the current roof lines on the Miller Park building to provide all-weather comfort for spectators, visitors and participants.
The clubs, which have about 500 members between them, were extremely happy with the support they received from the community.
"It's awesome; and it's not just about these two clubs but the whole community," Wildcats secretary Lauren Fairfull said, adding that the facility is also used by schools and for touch football.
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said council was proud to be able to support this important community project that will benefit the broader community.
"In the Cessnock local government area we certainly love watching sport and showing our support. This new shelter will be a great asset to protect spectators from the elements," he said.
"Well done to the State Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr for bringing this great program into our community."
Beyond Church will receive $199,980 after its Above and Beyond Play Space project placed second in the electorate with 1086 votes.
The playground and barbecue area will be built at the rear of the church property on the corner of Hall and Charlton Street, providing a safe and secure fenced facility that will be open to all members of the community.
Church pastors Luke and Rachel Main said it is exciting news.
"It's a significant investment into the heart of our CBD. As a church it's always on our heart to be a blessing to our community, so this really will change the game in that way," Luke said.
Rachel said the $10,000 raised by the Cessnock Sisterhood in 2014 (which has been held in trust since then) will go towards the project.
"It's going to be super-exciting to see this beautiful, brand-new playground take shape," she said.
Cessnock MP Clayton Barr said a great range of projects were submitted across the electorate.
"Thank you to all the local organisations and community groups who submitted applications and congratulations to the two successful recipients. And thank you to all the community members who took the time to vote for your favourite projects," he said.
"This funding will deliver much needed improvements to the Miller Park facility and provide a protective area for all to participate, enjoy and watch several of our local sports teams.
"The Above and Beyond Community Play Space is a fantastic addition to the Cessnock community. Facilities that are inclusive for all community members enhances the lives of many."
