Seventy finalists from more than 100 businesses from across the Hunter Region competed for the four major awards and 14 category awards at the gala presentation at Cessnock Leagues Club.
Palfreyman Chartered Accountants also took out the professional services category, and was named in the top four finalists for Business of the Year alongside The Garis Group of Hamilton (financial and real estate winner), Elderslie's Hunter Pet Motel (home-based business) and mobile business Gymnastics 21 (health services).
It's the second big award in a matter of months for Palfreyman Chartered Accountants principal Simone Palfreyman, who was named Accountant of the Year at the 2019 Women in Finance Awards in July.
Ms Palfreyman said Friday's award was a massive achievement.
"Having started as a small home-based business that was aimed at supporting my children while continuing my profession, Palfreyman Chartered Accountants has grown into a CBD business that is able to give staff the opportunity to work flexible hours, to follow their dreams and to achieve themselves," she said.
"We have been so lucky to work with the best clients, and to do amazing things together with them. It is just an honour to be able to help everybody is such a positive way.
"Personally, this award recognises that work-life balance is the key to a successful business."
The awards are the initiative of the Hunter Region Business Hub, and in their 26th year, are one of the longest-running awards events in the region.
The Hub's manager Kerry Hallett said each year she is amazed by the quality of businesses that enter the awards, so many new entrants are received each and every year.
"We're so lucky to have so many fantastic businesses on our doorstep. This year was no exception," she said.
"All of the finalists were exceptional businesses in their overall operations, service, products, presentation and customer service.
"On the night, it was great to see everyone - businesses owners, staff, supporters and sponsors - mingling, connecting and supporting each other.
"We know there are many good businesses in our region through those that enter the awards, however, we also know that is only fraction of the organisations pursing excellence in the region.
"We can see why the Hunter is a great place to live and work."
