Racing for the first time with the No.1 on her car, Sunerton had earned pole position on the grid but took up the Cash Cow Challenge of starting at the rear of the field and collecting $10 for each car she passed.
Banking on the usual several yellow flag restarts over the 20-lap distance, Sunerton bargained on a top 10 finish in the field of 24.
"My luck as it turned out there was only one yellow flag for the entire race, but somehow I managed to beat everyone home bar one," she laughed.
"I was really keen to show everyone that I deserved to have the No.1 on my car, I know I won the title, but it's such a huge honour I didn't want to let myself or anyone down."
Far from letting anyone down, she passed 22 other vehicles to finish second behind Stephen Kurtz, with Steve Walsh third in the feature.
"The cash challenge is a new concept and it was great fun, but I certainly wouldn't be swapping pole in a title meeting," Sunerton said.
"I earned pole by finishing first and second in my heats and as I had missed the first round of the club championship I thought why not go for it and accept the challenge.
"It felt really good to race so well with the Australian No.1 on the side of my car. It took 20 years of racing and a lot of hard work to finally win it, I think I might hold onto it for a while longer."
The date for the Australian title has yet to be announced.
