The money was raised through the annual envelope appeal and funds from regular barbecues held at Bunnings Warehouse Cessnock.
Donor group convenor Bruce Wilson said local support for the institute began in 1963 by Cessnock Quota Club with the late Olive Drayton a driving force.
Subsequent years have changed the organisation running the appeal that has for several years operated under the Cessnock City Donor Group.
Mr Wilson said it is estimated more that more than $150,000 has been donated over time which goes towards research conducted by the CMRI.
He thanked the loyal supporters who donate to the long-standing envelope appeal that this year amounted to $1000.
CMRI community relations officer Jennifer Philps was in Cessnock recently to thank the group for its continuing support and to provide an update on advances made in research at the institute.
