Communities around Australia paused for one minute's silence at 11am on Monday to remember all who have served the nation in World War I and every conflict since.

Kurri Kurri RSL Sub-branch hosted its Remembrance Day service in Rotary Park, with most of the 60-plus people in attendance gathering under the shade of the trees.

A US6 Studebaker military vehicle with a 25-pound gun - which had been on display at the Greta Army Camp anniversary on the weekend - made a special appearance at the ceremony.

Bugler Karen Newton once again played the Last Post, bringing a tear to the eye of some of those in the crowd.

Earlier on Monday morning in Kurri Kurri, a mural honouring the women of World War I was revealed on the side of the town's library. It followed the unveiling of a replica World War I honour roll at Kurri Kurri Public School on Friday.

Remembrance Day services were also held at Cessnock, Weston and Greta.

The Cessnock event attracted a larger-than-usual crowd, which Cessnock RSL Sub-branch president Max Lewis noted as he led the service, also reminding the audience of the other conflicts that Australians had fought and died in: "We have not forgotten and neither will we ever forget."

Among those laying wreaths at the cenotaph were Cessnock Police Chief Inspector Michael Gorman, Cessnock RSL Sub-branch secretary Dave Owens and Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon.

"November 11 has become a day to remember all wars and both those who have served and still serve. In particular, those who gave their lives for their country or were wounded while wearing the uniform of the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army, or the Royal Australian Airforce," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

"Remembrance Day is also a time to think about those who have recently served and face on-going injury or psychological problems as a result of their service."

Kane Haggett, a Newcastle University student, travelled to Cessnock to play the Last Post.
