Mount View Year 11 students Ben Galvin, Tobias Astill-King, Fei Fei Webster and Harley Patterson teamed up with Penrith Christian College's Imogen Rogers, Paige Foley, Brock Stinson, Caleb Kraus and Alex Weeks to form team Ascension, after their teams placed second and third at the Australian finals in March.

The world finals were held at Yas Marina Circuit from Monday to Wednesday last week, with Team Evolve UK named the overall winner.

Ascension took out the coveted Best Engineered Car award and was runner-up for the Scrutineering award at the world finals.

Best Engineered Car is considered one of the three big prizes of the competition, along with Best Innovation and Fastest Car.

F1 in Schools is the world's largest secondary school technology program, with more than nine million students take part.

Teams design, test, make and race miniature Formula 1 cars capable of 85 km/h, but they also need leadership, team building, project management, business planning, public speaking, marketing, writing and presentation skills to succeed.

Mount View High School principal Desley Pfeffer said the whole school is proud of the students' achievement.

"Having our students succeed in competition with high-performing schools from around with world is the clearest possible demonstration of what we're capable of," Ms Pfeffer said.

"We extend our heartiest congratulations to all the team members, the students who've supported them back here, and to the staff who have inspired them to such a wonderful effort."

It was the second time Mount View High has been represented at the F1 in Schools world finals, after members of its Revolution Racing team combined with a Tasmanian team and secured a wildcard entry in 2017 - and placed 14th overall.

The school has competed in the F1 in Schools challenge since 2004, and has competed at national level for the past five years.

The Ascension team members will return to Mount View on Wednesday, after spending time at the season-ending Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
