And, there's an added bonus for the businesses who are judged to have the best displays.
The competition offers participating businesses the chance to win a share of $600 worth of 'Cessnock Dollars' (to be spent at a business in the Cessnock LGA by June 2020).
Three prizes - each valued at $200 - will be awarded; one for the best light display in the evening, the best window display during the daytime, and the most original display.
Chamber vice-president Rienna de Visser said the idea behind the promotion is for businesses to be proactive.
"Basically we want to encourage businesses to put the spirit back into Christmas, and to get involved and do something about it," she said.
"It will also ensure that people coming to the area for the Hunter Valley Gardens lights and driving through town will see a pretty and inviting town," she said.
"A string of lights is $10 - that's not even two beers at the pub."
Simply post a photo of your decorated shop to the Cessnock Chamber of Commerce Facebook page to be in the running to be selected as one of two finalists from each category.
Winners will be decided by public vote, with the finalists to be posted to the chamber's Facebook page on December 17, and voting to close on December 22.
