The gentle former racehorse who had spent more than a year in a paddock patiently waiting for her new family, finally finds a home.
Freya, the 20-year-old mare, had spent just over 450 days in care at the RSPCA, until Lucy's Run winery owners Heather and Brad Wright saw an article in our sister publication, the Maitland Mercury
This week, as the friendly giant snuggled into her new owners' necks, they told us how they'd found their newest companion.
The couple said they had seen an article in the Mercury about the long term residents at Hunter RSPCA earlier this year, and instantly fell in love with the mare.
They rushed over to the Rutherford located shelter and were blown away by the horse's gentle and quiet nature.
"We didn't know about her personality then but we would've taken her anyway - even if she was a ratbag," Mr Wright said.
Ms Wright said she believed the mare was just happy to finally have a home.
"We got her off the float and she looked around, and she took off around the paddock," Ms Wright added.
Now Freya will spend her twilight years munching on grated carrot, trotting around her own paddock and being doted on by her new family.
Ms Wright encouraged others to adopt older animals.
She said a lot of "golden oldies" were overlooked for younger animals but there was something special about nurturing an older animal during their twilight years.
"We saw that she'd been there for more than 450 days, and she just looked lovely and the fact she was 20 years old. A lot of rescue places have no trouble placing puppies and kittens," she said.
"Sometimes older animals don't get a look in. It's wonderful but you've got to be prepared as well."
Ms Wright also credited the Hunter RSPCA for the care they took of Freya.
But Freya isn't the only rescue on the Wine Country Drive located property with two cows - Thelma and Louise - as well as a couple cats.
"We absolutely love her. We didn't know her nature but she is so beautiful," Mr Wright added.
The mare will also have her very own vintage with the winemakers promising a specially named wine after their new addition.
If you're looking for a new companion, the RSPCA is doing an adoption drive this weekend.
From February 21 to February 23, adopting a pet from RSPCA NSW will cost just $29 - whatever the animal's age, size or species.
There are plenty dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and even a sheep - aptly named Sheepy - looking for their fur-ever homes.
