The Abermain Eisteddfod - which was to mark its 103rd anniversary in 2020 - has been cancelled.
The school choir competition was scheduled to be held on August 10 and 11, and the speech and drama, vocal and instrumental and dance sections were to run in late September and early October.
Eisteddfod director Moya Waters said the committee was very supportive of the decision to cancel this year's event in full.
"While it was just outside of the six-month mark, there still could be restrictions in place," Ms Waters said.
It was set to be a big year for the eisteddfod, with the dance section to be held at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre for the first time.
"It would have taken it to the next level," Ms Waters said, adding that the performing arts centre has been secured for next year's competition.
"We are hoping we can get the support from the community to come back bigger and bolder next year," she said.
