Cessnock City Council's draft Skate and BMX Strategy includes recommendations for the city's existing skate and BMX facilities and outlines future needs, including upgrades to current facilities, priorities for new facilities and future investigations.

New local-level skate parks at Millfield and Cliftleigh; skate spot/nodes at Huntlee, Bellbird North and Kitchener, and detailed designs for the Carmichael Park BMX facility at Bellbird and the Cessnock Regional Skatepark on Mount View Road are among the high-priority items identified in the draft strategy.

Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said it's an important strategy for our growing community.

"By the year 2031 it's anticipated an additional 29,000 people, including 6000 children, will call the Cessnock local government area home," Cr Pynsent said.

"This has implications on the current skate and BMX facilities.

"We want community members to take a look at the strategy and provide us with feedback so we can better meet the needs of our community as we plan for the future of wheeled sports."

"We know the community want to see improvements to the provision of such facilities.

"Council has received eight petitions over the last 10 years for various skate park facilities across the LGA.

"Now is an excellent time for those residents who signed petitions over the years to provide council with their feedback during public exhibition. "

Key points in the draft strategy include the need for supporting infrastructure such as shade, seating, access to water and pathways; providing facilities that cater for beginners and that encourage and enable skills progression, and a user preference of transition and street styles.
