Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to the scene on Tennant Street just before 7pm, and arrived to find a house fully involved in fire.
No-one was at home at the time.
Crews from Bellbird, Paxton, Cessnock and East Maitland brought the blaze under control by about 8pm, and used hose lines to cool gas cylinders and protect exposed buildings.
Fire and Rescue NSW acting superintendent Scott Dodson said it was a timely reminder for the community to develop their fire escape plan.
"Now is the time for residents to check they have a working smoke alarm and that all members of the family have an awareness of calling Triple Zero (000) in an emergency," he said.
