While the Hunter has so far been spared the worst of the virus, we have had outbreaks. We need to stay on our toes in the fight against its spread. A wider outbreak in the Hunter would cost lives and livelihoods.
All of us have a part to play in the fight: social distancing, proper hygiene, getting tested if symptoms appear, following the advice on travel restrictions and downloading the COVIDSafe app. We can't be careless. We shouldn't dismiss health advice as some sort of attack on our freedoms or individual rights either.
We wouldn't ignore our GP if they told us to take action to save our lives. And we shouldn't let the progress we are making on investments into potential vaccines be an excuse to stop following the health advice. Such a situation could cause a wave of infection far greater than we have experienced.
The Hunter has done well so far and we should be proud of that fact. Let's keep it up. Lives, particularly those of our most vulnerable, are at stake, as are the jobs and businesses that have made us such a strong and proud region.
