So we thought we'd take a look back at the Goannas' legendary 1977 grand final victory over their old foes.
Cessnock defeated Maitland (then known as the Pumpkin Pickers) 21-17 in the first grade grand final, with tries to George Ambrum, Henry Tatana and Peter Davies, and captain-coach Tatana kicking six goals.
The team consisted of G Redgrove, G Payne, G Ambrum, M Goldman, T Williams, N Stevens, J Fairns, D Pemberton, P Davies, R Everson, H Tatana, B Holden, W Jowett, D Moore, R Mullard and W Jobson.
Cessnocks reserve grade side (led by Gary Johns) won their grand final and the under-18s side also took out the premiership, making it a year to remember for the Goannas.
The 1977 title was the Goannas' seventh Newcastle Rugby League premiership, after wins in 1941, 1950, 1954, 1955, 1960 and 1972.
It would be 26 years before the Goannas won their next premiership, beating Raymond Terrace in the 2003 decider.
Cessnock has featured in six grand finals since (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2019), but has gone down each time - including a 24-8 loss to Maitland in 2010.
The Goannas will take on the Pickers at Maitland Sportsground this Saturday, with Blues Tag at 10.30am, under-19s (Maitland vs Macquarie) at 11.45am, and first grade at 1pm (reserve grade has a bye).
The Pickers' Presidents Cup semi-final against Hills Bulls will follow at 3pm.
