Slashing the tax on tap beer.

The price of a pint is usually topped up twice a year thanks to a government levy.

But some pubs and clubs smashed by coronavirus restrictions are struggling to stay afloat.

Coopers, Lion and Carlton & United Breweries want the Commonwealth to come to the party in next week's federal budget.

"We need to make a beer at the pub more affordable. It is as simple as that," CUB chief Peter Filipovic said.

"A cut or at the very least a freezing of excise will give hospitality businesses a chance to get back on their feet."

The brewers say Australians pay the fourth-highest beer tax in the industrialised world.

"Aussie beer drinkers deserve a break," Mr Filipovic said.

"By cutting excise the government has an opportunity to incentivise Australians to get out and about and support our vibrant, world-leading hospitality industry."

Beer sales fell through the floor in the June quarter as venues shut down or wound back their operations.

Strong bottle shop sales did not make up the difference.

Brewers also want to see a domestic tourism package tailored to the hospitality sector in the October 6 budget, along with a continuation of JobKeeper wage subsidies.
