NSW Ambulance paramedics found the man had suffered a minor injury to his face as a result of the crash and he was taken to Maitland District Hospital for treatment.
Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to Darwin Street shortly before 10am, arriving to find a small hatchback had crashed into the rear of the Bakers Delight store in the Cessnock City Centre complex.
No-one inside the building was injured.
The driver was trapped after the accident, which firefighters said had also "severely impacted" the stability of the building.
Firefighters worked with specialist engineers to render the building safe.
Bakers Delight was closed for the remainder of Wednesday, but was hoping to reopen on Thursday.
