The Cancer Council fundraiser was originally scheduled for October 17, then moved to November 21, but has now been officially called off.

"With the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and risk to participant safety, we have made the difficult decision that it will not be viable to hold this year's Cessnock Relay For Life," Cancer Council NSW Hunter-Central Coast community lead, Sarah Russell said.

"Despite our hope that Cessnock Relay For Life could go ahead as planned, we have been monitoring the ever-changing COVID-19 situation in NSW and, especially considering recent outbreaks in Victoria, we feel this is the most responsible decision to help protect our community.

"The health and safety of our community is of upmost importance.

"We are so grateful for your continued support and understanding, and we apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment this decision may cause."

Three teams had officially registered for the 2020 relay before restrictions on events were introduced in March, raising $1090.

Chair of the volunteer organising committee, Stephanie Ekert, said while the committee is disappointed the relay won't be going ahead in 2020, it won't stop them from planning a "bigger and better" event next year.

"We still have hope to beat cancer," Ms Ekert said.

Ms Russell said all funds raised for this year's event have been put towards Cancer Council's research and prevention programs and information and support services.

"The website will remain open for any last-minute banking until November and any donations that you raise will still go towards supporting cancer patients in need," she said.

"COVID-19 may have halted our events, but cancer never stops. We know that Relay For Life is a treasured opportunity to come together to help people affected by cancer.

"There are still many ways for our community to show support of cancer patients at this time, including Do It For Cancer, Pink and The Longest Day."
