A Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service spokesman said Ambulance NSW tasked the aircraft to attend after initial reports indicated a 44-year-old man had been injured.
Paramedics attended and began treating the man before the chopper arrived.
The helicopter's critical care medical team stabilised the patient before he was flown to the John Hunter Hospital about 8.25pm on Monday night.
The man was in a serious but stable condition, the spokesman said.
It follows a horror period in the Hunter in which four people died in two separate crashes on Sunday.
Three people died in a crash near Muswellbrook, while a woman died after her four-wheel drive rolled into a river at Upper Allyn.
