STEVE Gordon is set to return to Newcastle Rugby League this weekend while Kurri teammate Nathan Ross still remains a little way off.

Gordon, who had two NRL games with the Knights in 2007, lines up in the centres when the Bulldogs travel to meet undefeated newcomers The Entrance on Sunday.

The former Wests and Central player missed Kurri's narrow loss to the Butcher Boys on Good Friday awaiting official clearance from Group 21 club Greta-Branxton, where he signed last year before coronavirus saw the Upper Hunter competition cancelled.

Ross (calf) was also on the sidelines for Kurri's season opener, having been washed out against Maitland in round one, and will be a "couple of weeks at least" according to Bulldogs captain-coach Mitch Cullen.

ROUND 3: Wyong v Lakes, Maitland v Cessnock (Saturday); Wests v Macquarie, The Entrance v Kurri Kurri, Souths v Central (Sunday).

* CENTRAL quartet Luke Walsh, Ethan Cook, Ethan Campbell and Jack Kelly are poised to undergo fitness tests at training on Thursday night determining if they tackle Souths at Townson Oval on Sunday.

With both Walsh and Kelly out, Brad Murray answered an SOS call to partner Dylan Phythian in the halves and helped the Butcher Boys clinch their first competition points for 2021.

* WESTS are still assessing the damage of injuries to Ryan Walker, Stephen Widders, Patrick Achurch, Liam Wiscombe and Dyllan Parlane from Thursday night's loss to the Goannas at Cessnock.

* WYONG plan to have their first home game at regular headquarters Morry Breen Oval when they host Lakes on Saturday with nearby alternate Bill Hicks having been used the opening two rounds.
