Repacholi and his teammate Dina Aspandiyarova shot a combined total of 380 on Tuesday morning to finish just four points outside the bronze medal shoot off.

The Aussies were eighth equal on points with the second team from China and India in the second stage of qualification for spots in the gold and bronze medal shoot offs.

The Chinese team of Ranxin Jiang and Wei Pang took gold from the Russian Olympic Committee's Vitalina Batsarashkina who claimed silver.

Ukraine's Olena Kostevych and Oleh Omelchuk won the bronze from Serbia.

In the second qualifying stage Repacholi shot a total of 191 and Aspandiyarova scored 189.

The Australian team had advanced in sixth spot to the second stage of qualification.

Their combined score of 576 (Repacholi 291, Aspandiyarova 285) was just six points behind the leaders the Indian team of Chaudhary Saurabh and Manu Bhaker.

The Australian duo were at least the most distinct of the 20 sides competing at the Asaka range.

Repacholi, taking part in his fifth Olympics, is an imposing 2.02m tall and boasts almost certainly the largest beard at these Games.

The 39-year-old from Cessnock also competed in rainbow socks, which were given to him by daughters Zoe and Asha.

The shooter was given permission by the Australian Olympic Committee to supplement its standard green-and-gold uniform.

At his fifth Olympics, Repacholi missed the final in the men's 10m air pistol on Saturday finishing 30th overall.

"Unfortunately the score didn't represent how well I actually shot," he posted on social media.

"All I can say is I was very unlucky with lots of shots just out of the 10 ring. I wouldn't change a thing about how I went about my match."

Repacholi recorded a total of 568 from his 60 shots, with half maximum 10s.
