Weston Food Care is a volunteer-run service which is part of Kingdom Community Church's hub in Station Street. It provides groceries for people who receive Centrelink benefits or have a Health Care Card.
Church board member and volunteer Daniel Watton said some customers thought the shop was closed during lockdown, and they wanted to make the community aware it was still operating as an essential service.
"It was quiet for a few weeks but since people realised we are still open, we have noticed a rise in demand," Mr Watton said.
"Some people are doing it really tough, and are at the mercy of the system."
Mr Watton said Food Care has also partnered with OzHarvest to provide emergency relief hampers for people with referrals.
The shop has also been providing work experience opportunities for young people, and with many of its elderly volunteers choosing to stay at home, it welcomes new volunteers (although numbers are limited due to social distancing requirements).
Weston Food Care is open Wednesday to Friday from 9.30am to 1pm at 53-55 Station Street.
Meanwhile, the church's youth program is running Friday night Kahoot games via Zoom. Send a private message to Kindgom Community Youth on Facebook for more information.
