In a boost for the Demons heading into Saturday night's grand final against the Western Bulldogs, Weideman has recommitted until the end of the 2023 season.
The 24-year-old has played just five games this season - his last coming in round 13 - after being forced out of the team in favour of fellow key forwards Ben Brown and Tom McDonald.
Despite attracting interest from rival clubs who could ensure him a starting spot, Weideman opted to stay with Melbourne
He has shown serious promise in his 49 AFL games and looms as a strong option for the Demons in coming years.
"We are excited that Sam has committed to the club for the next two seasons," Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb said.
"Whilst at times this year has been frustrating for him personally, Sam has not wavered in his attitude and application.
"He is a terrific young man who is much loved and respected by everyone at the club.
"His talent is undoubted and at only 24 years of age, we are really confident that his best football is ahead of him."
Weideman said he had been enjoying the success of the club despite not being involved in the final team for the decider.
"The last two weeks have been some of the more enjoyable I've had in footy and to be able to be part of a grand final build up has been a great experience," Weideman said.
"I love the boys, I love the club and it's a great place to be."
