As of Sunday, 49.2 percent of Cessnock's eligible residents had received two doses of the vaccine, while 83.7 percent had received one jab.
Although still well below the state average (which as of Monday was 67.1 percent double-jabbed), and unlikely to reach 70 percent by the time the state starts to reopen next week, Cessnock's vaccination rates have increased by more than six percent over the past week, boosted by two major walk-in Pfizer clinics in the town.
IN THE NEWS:
A clinic facilitated by Hunter Aboriginal medical service Awabakal Ltd at PCYC Cessnock last Wednesday administered 419 jabs, while another 400-odd people received their vaccination at a NSW Health clinic at Cessnock Hospital on Friday.
Fifteen-year-old Daniella Ganino, of Wollombi, was among a queue of about 60 people who had lined up for the clinic before it opened at 10am.
"It's the responsible thing to do," Daniella said.
"I want to get back to sport, school and work."
Cessnock MP Clayton Barr said these pop-up hubs provided a "really exciting chance" for the local community to get their Pfizer vaccinations.
"It has been great to see lines of people turning up to get their jab. Really great stuff," he said.
"Locals will still have a couple of chances to get to one of these vaccination hubs in the coming days, but after that HNEH will need to turn their attention to other areas with low vaccination rates. So don't miss out!"
The next NSW Health pop-up hub will be held at Finding Yellow Weston (92 Station Street) this Friday from 10am to 4pm.
Awabakal has also partnered with Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council to hold Pfizer clinics in Aberdare every Thursday. These clinics are held at 55 Aberdare Road and are for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 12 and over. Bookings can be made on 4015 7000.
Cessnock disability support provider Believe Services will hold Pfizer clinics at its Vincent Street office on Wednesday and Thursday this week. These clinics will be for people with disability, disability workers and aged care workers, and their family members. Bookings can be made at https://27764.covidhub.com.au.
Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines are now available at several local pharmacies and GP clinics, and people over 60 are now eligible for any of the three different types of vaccine offered in Australia.
