The party faithful gathered in Canberra on Saturday for a federal council meeting - the first since David Littleproud took over leadership of the Nationals following the coalition's election loss in May.

In the first address of the meeting, Ms Hull spoke of the importance of women in politics and the contribution they made to key regional industries, including agriculture.

"We need to be resetting, ensuring we are embracing particularly the women of our nation," she said.

"And so they are part of our heartland ... we stand as one of the few parties that have such a proud track record.

"I think there are many areas that we need to embrace and further reset."

Analysis of the coalition's election defeat showed women deserted the Liberal Party in droves, with a number of women - the teal independents - winning city seats from the party.

They strongly campaigned on climate change action and integrity.

Ms Hull said the Nationals was the most diverse of any political party, and spruiked the lived experience of its members.

"They've had to make decisions and pay for mistakes out of their own pocket, not out of the taxpayers purse," she said.

"They make decisions on good economic basis on what they would do if this was their own business and their own livelihood."

Mr Littleproud is expected to talk about his priorities for the upcoming jobs summit and the review into nuclear power.

"We are going to have to face up to some of the challenges we've got," he told AAP.

"We retained all of our seats at the election, but you only have to look at the numbers to see that women left us so we have to go out and talk to them."

The party's federal director Jonathan Hawkes is stepping down after three years in the top administrative job.

Mr Littleproud, deputy leader Perin Davey and leader of the Nationals in the Senate Bridget McKenzie will give speeches at Saturday's conference.

He was elected leader in May, following Labor's election victory, and emerged the winner of a three-way contest with ousted leader Barnaby Joyce and former minister Darren Chester.

Mr Littleproud has called for the party to "evolve" with the changes in the electorate, but to also continue to stand up for rural and regional Australians.

The Nationals held all of their lower house seats at the election.

Six MPs achieved swings to them, including Andrew Gee (Calare), Mr Chester (Gippsland), Anne Webster (Mallee), Kevin Hogan (Page), Mark Coulton (Parkes) and Mr Littleproud (Maranoa).

But in an election where climate change was a dominant issue, the Nationals received swings against them in the seats of Flynn and Capricornia where the coal industry was strongly promoted.
