So what better way to bring the community together than with a giant singalong?
The music education team from Wild Learning are planning to do just that at a new event called Cessnock Sings.
Described as “karaoke meets a flash mob”, the community singalong will be held at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on March 17.
Wild Learning founder Emmie Hallett said her team hopes the event will fill the CPAC foyer and turn the night into an “awesome and really fun pop up choir experience”.
“This event is for people who live, work and are connected to the greater Cessnock region,” Ms Hallett said.
“The Wild Learning team is working really hard to create seriously fun things to do right here using the fabulous local spaces, talent and resources we have in our community.
“It’s about making it as loud, as social and as much fun as possible.”
Ms Hallett said Cessnock Sings is inspired by local events such as the Great Cessnock Christmas Elf Challenge, the Stomp Festival and Spring Awakening.
“We have a great sense of community in Cessnock, and I’d like to see us all build on that sense of fun and belonging by bringing together as many people as I can to do more cool stuff,” she said.
The Foundations’ 1968 number one hit Build Me Up Buttercup has been chosen as the first song for the inaugural Cessnock Sings.
“A couple of fitting names for the first song and its band in this series that brings community together,” Ms Hallett said.
Lyric sheets will be provided and the words will be projected onto a big screen – so you don't need to be able to read music and you don't need to have any singing experience at all.
“This is not a concert – it's an experience that you are part of,” Ms Hallett said.
“Our super fun music education team will teach the whole audience to join in and sing together to create an incredible sound.”
Cessnock Sings is a free event, but participants are encouraged to make a donation on the night to help cover costs.
The event will start at 6pm. Register online at http://tix.yt/wild-learning-cessnocksings-march-2017.
