David Atwell (Ward A), Greg Astill (Ward B), Chris Parker (Ward C) and James Ryan (Ward D) have been pre-selected as a team to represent the sound principles and values of the Greens to restore transparent representation for the residents of Cessnock, said Cr. Parker when the candidates were announced last Thursday.
Mayoral candidate, Cr. James Ryan, said “It is a sad time for Cessnock. The ICAC has announced it is conducting a preliminary investigation into the council and it is widely acknowledged that the council is not operating well.
“On top of that the council is considering entering into $8million debt which will prevent future councils delivering services for the community.
“Council needs the new fresh leadership that the Greens offer,” he added.
The primary goals of the Greens for Cessnock City Council are:
1) To have a responsible council which is not in debt.
2) To properly implement the road construction program and have independent testing of the construction quality.
3) To reduce council’s electricity costs by installing renewable solar energy generation on council's buildings.
4) To join Millfield to Kurri with an unbroken cycleway.
5) To oppose the creep of coal seam gas wells across the council area.
6) To help protect the jobs of thousands of people, who are employed by the vineyards and wineries, which in turn are worth millions in solid long term investments to the region.
Cr. Parker said the Greens represent a fresh start for Cessnock, a fresh approach which will encourage clean sustainable businesses and new cycleways and children's playgrounds.
