The 82-year-old was determined to take part in the community access day, which allowed the public to walk or cycle between the Kurri and Buchanan interchanges.
Mr. Hafey was in the crowd during the official ribbon cutting carried out by Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker and member of the Support the Link or Sink group.
When the official proceedings were over, he was lucky enough to score a piece of the ribbon which he has now framed to keep as a memento from the historic event.
Despite being a bit hesitant about whether or not he would be able to handle the six-kilometre trek, Mr. Hafey said that he wasn’t going to let his age stop him from experiencing the “once in a lifetime opportunity”.
“I just wanted to do it for my own personal satisfaction,” he said.
“I went along pretty slowly but that just allowed me to take it all in.
“I am one of the lucky ones because no one will get to walk on the Hunter Expressway like that again.”
