But the Aberdare woman is challenging herself like never before, by entering the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers – a two-day, 60-kilometre walk in Sydney in November that benefits The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Noelene has convinced her friend Karen Lucas of Weston, niece Amanda Stone (Bathurst) and Karen’s cousin Wendy Hazeltine (Sydney) to form a team for the weekend.
They are fittingly known as “The Pink Ladies” to represent the signature colour of breast cancer, a disease close to all of their hearts.
Noelene’s sister and aunty have both had breast cancer and she said she has entered the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers to give something back to the community.
“Every person can make a difference,” she said.
“It’s about time we had a cure.”
Noelene regularly walks a couple of kilometres a day, while Karen said the event was the motivation she needed to get active.
They will aim to walk from Cessnock to Kurri in the lead-up to the weekend.
More than 1200 people took part in the inaugural Weekend to End Women’s Cancers in 2013, which raised $3.4 million for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Funds raised support Lifehouse’s In Patient Care Program, which consists of comprehensive cancer treatment including medical and complementary therapies.
The walk starts at Darling Harbour on November 8, travels through the suburbs of Sydney and camps overnight at Meadowbank Park, Ryde, before returning to Darling Harbour the next day.
The participants have set a personal fundraising goal of $2000.
