Jonathon Dodds and Damien Baker have been working their way around the vineyard region, picking snails from vines and gardens as part of a work placement with Hunter Valley Snails.
Jonathon and Damien have picked thousands of snails – used for the French delicacy escargot – in recent weeks and are doing businesses such as Brokenwood and Calais Estate a big favour by removing the tasty pests.
MWLFS manager Barry Miller said that the placement was a great chance for the men to get hands-on experience in the work force.
“Jonathon and Damien are immensely proud of their jobs, and are quite competitive when it comes to who tracks down the most snails,” he said.
“This is a great example of local employers providing meaningful employment opportunities to people with a disability or barrier to employment.”
The snail picking season continues over the next few months.
