Liberal councillor Bryce Gibson will ask council to prepare a report on the pros and cons of changing council’s code of meeting practice to hold only one council meeting per month.
“It is common practice for large and very successful corporations to hold a meeting once a month and as council could be classed as this there is no reason why all business could not be dealt with on a monthly basis with extra ordinary meetings held when absolutely necessary,” Cr. Gibson said.
“There are other councils within NSW that meet once a month and with modern practices and available technology there is no reason that a once a month meeting cannot be successful.
“In doing this it would lessen the burden on council staff working with a monthly schedule and it would also ensure that councillors are more accountable for their decision making.
“It would also show a strong leadership statement instead of a managerial statement that council needs to lead from the front instead of micromanaging staff.”
Cr. Gibson’s notice of motion tonight will also ask that a review of the general manager’s delegations take place with a view to allowing operational issues to be resolved without the need for matters to go to council for a decision.
