Mortimer came in at the fall of the second wicket and notched his maiden ton, working the ball around nicely to finish unbeaten on 114. This innings included 18 boundaries and one maximum, but it was unfortunately not enough to get this team home as he ran out of partners in pursuit of Peden’s Hotel’s target of 213.
In first grade an understrength Bellbird jumped into outright second position on the ladder with an 85-run thrashing of an out-of-sorts Greta/Branxton at Miller Park.
Stand in Tigers’ skipper Ben Fairlie won the toss and elected to bat, with the visitors accumulating nicely after a steady start to post 8-181 from their mandatory 40 overs. Elliot Gyler pressed claim for a permanent top order gig with a patient 46 batting at number three.
Opening bowling partner Matt Tomlinson also showed he is no mug with the timber with 43, while Fairlie (20), Steph Durie (20no) and former skipper Andrew Howson (15) all worked the ball around nicely.
Jake Goodyer was the best of the Greta/Branxton attack with an expensive 4-61 off 10, with openers Brent Watson (2-26 off 10) and Mick Shelley (2-29 off 10) bowling economically.
The run chase started badly for the home side, losing a wicket with the third ball of the innings and it did not improve much as wickets fell at regular intervals.’ They were all out in the 26th over for just 96.
Barry Richards (22), Josh Dagg (19), Brent Watson (19) and Vic Malhotra (13) all made starts but they were never really in the contest. Gyler capped an excellent all-round game with 4-19 off five, as did Tomlinson with 2-14 off six, with Billy Orr (2-18 off 5) also bowling very tidily.
Mulbring continued their dominant start to the season making it five wins from five starts with a more than convincing 117-run victory over Supporters Club at Baddeley Park.
Batting first the Marlins continued their good form by scoring freely to accumulate 8-233 from their 40 overs, with skipper Josh Lewis promoting himself to opener and blasting 89.
Adam Sheehan was next best with an unbeaten 38, with Drew Olsen (29) and Chad Lewis (19) adding to the healthy total. Paul Wright was the best of the Supporters attack with 4-55 off 10, with veteran Alan Clarke (2-36 off 10) chipping in with a couple of wickets.
The Goannas were slow out of the blocks in reply and were never really in the hunt, eventually dismissed inside 33 overs for 116. Michael Ho (29), Tim Goldman (26), Mike Gates (21) and Jack Morris (15) all made handy contributions, but someone really had to push on to a big score to cause an upset. Brad Strachan was superb with the ball for the Marlins, bagging 6-34 off 10.
In the final game of the round Peden’s Hotel recorded a much needed four-wicket victory over Wine Country East End. Wine Country batted first and posted a competitive 148, with Matt Lightfoot continuing his recent good form with 49.
Association president Mark O’Hara found some form at the top of the order with 44, with Josh Bower adding to the total with 15. Zac Tyne was Peden’s best with the four-piece, collecting 4-40 off 10, with Daniel Olsen (2-30 off 10), Dale Johnston (2-37 off 8) and skipper Matt Hopley (2-17 off 7) all snaring a brace of wickets each.
The Piranhas made light work of the run chase, passing the target (6-150) in the 21st over with four wickets in hand. Left handed opener Pete Brennan’s entertaining 18-ball half century (52) included six boundaries and three Dorothys.
Veteran Gavin Kronholm was equally impressive with an unbeaten 45, with Jacob Waite (13) doing enough to get the home side across the line. Wine Country opening bowlers Peter Auditore (3-59 off 10) and Dale Arnold (3-72 off 10) toiled hard but struggled to maintain the Piranhas onslaught.
