Players and followers showed up in force at Hunter Stadium over the weekend for round four of the Hyundai A-League – the designated Hyundai Goals for Grassroots match.
With up to $10,000 on the line, Cessnock United were cheering on the Newcastle Jets as they took on southern state rivals Melbourne Victory.
As the selected Hyundai Goals for Grassroots junior team Cessnock United FC automatically received $1000, and for every goal Newcastle Jets scored during the match the club would receive an additional $1000 bonus.
By virtue of Newcastle Jets scoring twice in the 2-2 home draw against Melbourne Victory, the junior club has now scored themselves a $3000 Hyundai Help for Kids grant. The club also received 20 complimentary tickets to attend the match, an on-field official cheque presentation and the filming of a professional one-minute video to help promote their club.
“We will use the Goals for Grassroots funds for kitting out our Special Olympic football team in Cessnock United club gear as well as supplying them with new training equipment,” Cessnock United Football Club secretary Ann Skinner said.
“We will also use some of the money to purchase new training equipment for the other teams in the club including flexi poles and new corner flags goal posts.”
Now in its eigth season, the Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program was initiated to support the growth of football in Australia by nurturing the game at its grassroots level.
Over 193 junior clubs have shared close to half a million dollars since the inception of the Goals for Grassroots program, which is a founding recipient of Hyundai Help for Kids.
‘We are very proud to be playing a part in Hyundai’s Help for Kids initiative through the Goals for Grassroots program,” Newcastle Jets team captain Kew Jaliens said.
“The heart-and-soul of all communities is linked to the kids, and we are delighted to be able to participate in actively encouraging and nurturing the community team players and their families.”
