The initiative has been organised by council rangers, who are keen to see every dog and cat in the local government area microchipped.
Ranger team leader Kurt Livens is hoping residents take advantage of the free event.
“People need to have their dog or cat microchipped by 12 weeks of age, at point of sale or when they are given away in order to comply with the law,” Mr. Livens said.
“Owners need to consider how important a microchip is because without one it’s harder for rangers to quickly locate and reunite owners with their lost pets.”
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent says the event is a positive initiative for the community.
“We always have such a great response from the community for the free microchipping day – it’s an opportunity for families to save on paying for something that every pet needs,” Cr. Pynsent said.
The free microchipping day will run from 10am to 2pm, and rangers will be on hand to answer any questions residents may have on the day.
All dogs must be on a lead and all cats are to be contained in a cage or carry basket.
The event is always popular, so advice is to arrive early.
Free show bags will be on offer to those who get in early – containing leads, dog treats, magnets and information about caring for your pet.
Hunter Animal Watch is also offering reduced rates for pensioners or health care card holders who wish to have their animals desexed if their animals are microchipped on the day (conditions apply).
