DEFENDING champion Chaz Mostert has crashed out of today's Bathurst 1000 qualifying session in spectacular fashion.
Mostert was taken to the medical centre for treatment following the crash but reports from the Mount said he was "conscious and talking to officials".
The #6 Pepsi Max Falcon skimmed the inside wall as Mostert exited The Dipper at the top of the Mount before spearing across the track and slamming into the wall opposite.
He skimmed the top of a wall and hit an officials' shelter before finally coming to rest.
The speed at that part of the track is usually around 175km/hr.
He has fractured left femur and fractured left wrist and has been airlifted to Orange Base Hospital.
He is receiving pain relief but is otherwise OK.
He did not lose consciousness and has been talking to family and team-mates.
Five race marshals were also injured. Four were taken treated at the scene with minor injuries and a fifth was taken to Bathurst hospital suffering from chest injuries, but he remains in a stable condition.
The rest of today's track activity has been cancelled.
It has been abandoned due to damage to the safety fencing where Mostert crashed.
