The school entered two teams in this year’s regional competition, one making it through to state level and progressing to the nationals.
Revolution Racing – made up of Jack Stephenson, Jarod O’Neil, Liam Whiteley, Connor Minchinton and Daniel Lambkin –made it to the national competition for the second consecutive year after winning at regional and state level.
Infinity Racing, consisting of Matthew Griffin (team manager), Wylie Neville (design engineer), Ainsley Flett (manufacturing engineer), Brianna Stothard (graphics designer) and Alex Kemp (resource manager) put in a strong performance at the regionals and only just missed the cut for state.
The team had finished approximately 15 cars – made mainly of machined balsa wood and 3D printed pieces – before hitting a last-minute snag in finding out their car did not fit the specifications in the modified rules.
The team redesigned their race car two weeks before the regional competition and still managed to compete strongly even after this shock.
Throughout the year the teams worked on designing their cars, displays and portfolios in order to reach the high standards set at this international competition.
The students also had to source sponsorship to fund their team essentials and transport to and from competitions.
Infinity Racing showcased their racing setup to staff at Cessnock City Motor Group, their major sponsor, last Thursday.
Cessnock City Motor Group also provided the team the opportunity to attend the V8 Supercars and gain an insight into what professional racing is really like and the amount of work and equipment that goes in to making racing machines on a professional level.
“Throughout this experience my team has learned so much and in the short amount of time we had, achieved what was needed for the program,” Infinity Racing team manager Matt Griffin said.
“Throughout our journey we have become closer than ever, as well as gaining life skills and contacts in the corporate world.”
