Hunter Valley Avicultural Society secretary-treasurer Deirdre Hills said about 3000 birds are expected to be for sale on the day.
“There will be everything from tiny little finches, canaries and budgies up to African greys and blue-and-gold macaws; something to suit everybody,” she said.
“There will be birds to interest all bird enthusiasts and it is a great opportunity for you to see birds that normally would not be seen around town.
“It is a great place to bring the kids to see some of our Native birds that they would not normally see.
Ms Hills said bird breeders have an important role in preserving certain species.
“Without them (breeders) there would be a lot of birds that wouldn’t exist any more,” she said.
“A lot of birds aren’t in the wild any more and some are very close to being extinct.”
A large variety of bird-related quality items will be available on the many trade tables.
The bird sale will be held at Cessnock Toyota Stadium (formerly known as Cessnock Civic Indoor Sports Centre) on May 28 from 10am to 2pm. Admission is $3.
The Hunter Valley Avicultural Society has about 240 members and meets on the third Friday of the month at Telarah Bowling Club.
