A community meeting about the proposed expansion of Cessnock Correctional Centre will be held at Cessnock Leagues Club on Sunday, August 7.
The public consultation period has been extended by two weeks – until 5pm Monday, August 22.
Cessnock MP Clayton Barr organised the meeting in response to community concerns about the proposed expansion, which would allow for another 1000 inmates at the prison.
“A large number of residents have been in touch with my office, objecting not only to the proposal but also contending that there has been insufficient time given for community consultation,” Mr Barr said.
“I would encourage all affected residents to attend the meeting.”
An invitation has been extended to NSW Corrections Minister David Elliott to attend the meeting, which will start at 12pm.
Mr Barr said he and other community leaders lobbied the corrections minister for the public consultation period to be extended.
Consultation will be open until 5pm on August 22 and feedback can be submitted to cessnockcorrectionalcentre@jbaurban.com.au or by calling 1800 743 436.
