Year seven students from Mount View, Cessnock and Kurri High Schools travelled to Maitland Park last Friday for a sports gala day.
The three Cessnock area schools came up against teams from Maitland, Maitland Grossman and Rutherford in various sports.
The students engaged in games of male and female soccer, male and female touch football, female netball, male handball, mixed t-ball and mixed volleyball.
Matches were played round-robin style, with the school with the most wins across all sports named the winner.
Maitland High School was the overall winner of the day this year.
However participation, sportsmanship and teamwork were also the winners among the 600-odd students who participated.
The gala day is an annual event for year seven students in the Coalfields zone.
