Smart Pups Assistance Dogs is a dedicated not-for-profit organisation that provides trained assistance dogs for children with special needs.
These dogs cost $25,000 to purchase, raise, train and place – and the organisation relies entirely on donations and fundraising efforts.
Bellbird boy Aaron Dewey, who has autism, has recently been approved for a Smart Pup.
Aaron's parents Chris and Sarah have started a crowdfunding campaign to help buy a puppy that will be specifically trained to help their four-year-old son in his daily life.
Aaron becomes overwhelmed and runs away when he is distressed, causing significant concern for his parents.
A Smart Pup is trained to remain calm and anchored in position at all times.
The dog can create a sense of security, reduce stress levels and anxiety and create the opportunity for social interactions, new experiences and learning.
