Students enrolled in TAFE or University in 2017 who live in the Cessnock local government area are encouraged to apply for next year’s Mayoral Academic Scholarships.

Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said the scholarships are for any young person choosing to undertake further education.
“Each year we offer a number of different scholarship opportunities which can support a person studying at University, TAFE or completing an apprenticeship,” Cr Pynsent said.
“Encouraging and supporting a young person to further their education, benefits not only the individual, but also their family and the broader community.”
Fourteen scholarships valued at $2500 each are available, in categories including:
- Mining technical engineering
- Mining
- Building and associated trades
- Hospitality and tourism
- Post-HSC (graduated in the past two years)
- Undergraduate (current student from 2017)
- TAFE
- Local government
- Aged care
- Child care
- Early childhood-primary education
- Secondary education
- Nursing
- Police service training
