February 28 is National Red Balloon Day, held on the last official day of the Australian summer to recognise the efforts of firefighters across the wide brown land.
It raises funds for firefighting organisations in each state, including the Rural Fire Service in NSW.
Kearsley Public School students and staff dressed in red on the day and raised $178 for the Kearsley Rural Fire Brigade.
School principal Melissa Trigg said the day provided students the opportunity to say thank you to the firefighters and to learn about volunteer organisations that help the community.
Kearsley Rural Fire Brigade volunteers Les Goldie, Jane Goldie and Fiona Brennan were on hand to give the students a demonstration of firefighting equipment.
