The Cessnock Mongrels rallied to push the undefeated Muswellbrook at Drain Oval on Saturday after being steamrolled by Muswellbrook’s giant forward pack in the first half.
Trailing 21-7, Cessnock regrouped at half-time with a never say die attitude to bring the score back to 24-21 with five minutes left in the game. Muswellbrook got a lucky break off the kick off and scored leaving the full time score 31-21.
Lewis Carberry and Cody Herrine got tires and Tan Cliford kicked one conversion and three penalty goals for Cessnock. The players’ players were Tane Clifford, Fabian Dunstan and Lewis Carberry.
Shane Doyle’s boot proved the difference in Pokolbin’s 14-12 win against Cooks Hill 2. Doyle converted tries by Daniel Burns and Stuart Garrett to separate the teams in the two-tries all fixture.
Pokolbin hosts Cessnock at St Phillip’s College Oval on Saturday at 3pm.
