I find Cr Doherty's letter (Advertiser, June 14) quite insulting if he is suggesting that, as safe Labor seats, we should be grateful for funding from a Coalition government.

I thought governments were elected to govern for all, not just for the party they represent?
However, I would remind Cr Doherty that we paid our taxes and even today still do by way of the GST.
Also that vast wealth from coal mining in our region goes into the coffers of the government.
Is Cr Doherty suggesting that we are unworthy or not entitled to funding for capital works that benefit all, including the many tourists to our region?
Regardless of what political party we support, we, as citizens are entitled to equal treatment by the government.
Perhaps Cr Doherty might like to go into bat for the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery while he's spruiking the largesse of his party – after all they can find $244 million for the NSW Art Gallery in Sydney, but no crumbs from the table for Newcastle.

The Salvation Army would like to send a big thank-you to the Australian public for its incredible support of this year’s Red Shield Appeal.
There is great need in our community and the Salvos would not be able to give hope to Australians doing it tough without the overwhelming generosity of the public each year.
We are especially grateful to the thousands of volunteers who assisted us over the Red Shield Doorknock weekend to help those in need. We are heartened to see the Australian public unite to give hope where it’s needed most.
In a typical week throughout Australia, the Salvos provide 100,000 meals for the hungry, 2000 beds for the homeless, distribute up to 8000 food vouchers and give refuge to 500 victims of abuse.
